Since 1999, News-watch has conducted detailed broadcast monitoring, using established research methods, and submitted evidence to broadcasters, regulators and government.

Analysis of European Union coverage forms the longest continuous strand of News-watch research. These studies trace BBC treatment of the theme from early monitoring of the Today programme through elections, the referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU, Brexit and subsequent developments.

These reports examine how the BBC interprets and applies its obligations of accuracy and impartiality. They include research into editorial standards, regulation, governance, methodology and the breadth and range of opinion represented in BBC output.

Complaints, responses and regulatory submissions provide an important documentary record of how News-watch findings have been tested and answered. This section brings together the exchanges behind individual cases and wider questions of BBC accountability.
